Los Fabulosos Má Mejores: Laughter, Tenderness, Baseball, Magic…a Brilliant Story in the Heart of Washington DC
Saturday November 5th, 2016Washington DC – In closing its successful series, the Dominican Film Showcase in Washington DC chose “Los Fabulosos Má Mejores” a children’s comedy that not only makes us laugh but also transmits a valuable message of hope and perseverance for adults while encouraging reflection. As part of its premiere in Washington DC on November 4th at the Art Museum of the Americas (AMA), the film’s director Carlos Manuel Plasencia and its producer Celinés Toribio were in attendance at the excellent event. The movie played to a full house of people of all ages who share an avid interest in seeing the best and latest Dominican productions made available in the nation’s capital.
Los fabulosos ma’ mejores, the first-ever Dominican comedy about children’s baseball, as Plasencia and Toribio explained, contained a positive message amid the laughter, tears and magic. The colorful story is about a children’s baseball team of dubious talent, scarce resources and a zany coach that needs to find a way, including using its charm, to get into the first Dominican Little League Baseball tournament.
The movie features an extraordinary and very funny cast of children under 14. Celinés Toribio, actress and executive producer of the film, said: “I’m delighted with the support I received to produce my third film in my country. It fills me with great pride that there is a niche that needs to be filled and that niche is children’s stories. Having shot this in just 28 days and having found the perfect child actors was a great achievement for my team and me.”
The multifaceted actress and producer enjoyed the experience of making this film so much that she already has another one in the pipeline. In her next film, girls will be the protagonists and football will be the sport. It will be a Mexico- Dominican co-production.
After the screening, we spoke to the two guests. Carlos Manuel Plasencia told us: “I am very happy and thankful to GFDD. They organized a beautiful presentation here in Washington, which the public really liked. The question and answer session was very interesting. Every audience is different, depending on the country. For that reason, I like to feel the energy of the audience and being here today.”
For her part, Celinés Toribo said: “This GFDD invitation is incredible. You have a fabulous organization and a tremendous team that puts its heart into its work. This initiative enhances Dominican film. We have been treated like royalty here, not only by Dr. Leonel Fernández, but by the entire team. Thank you!! What a brilliant initiative.”
GFDD Executive Director Natasha Despotovic expressed gratitude to both of them, and other guests, for coming to Washington to celebrate and show the world great Dominican film.
The audience had a great deal of positive commentary on the movie. Geovanny Vicente Romero, political analyst, said: “First of all, thank you once again for the opportunity to see the films the GFDD brings to Washington DC. This production, which closed the Dominican Film Showcase, provided us with a moral lesson on a personal level and taught us that with hard work anything is possible. It also stressed that one should never give up even when circumstances seem insurmountable. The story line and dialogue demonstrated the great skill necessary to achieve great humor.”
