  • Special Presentation of First Feature Film Directed by Waddys Jaquez in New York’s Lincoln Center

    An enthusiastic audience packed Lincoln Center’s Walter Reade Theatre last Wednesday, July 25, 2018, to view the special presentation of the Dominican film “La Barbería,” Dominican film maker Waddys Jaquez’ first feature film. At the end of the presentation, the audience gave a prolonged standing ovation to the film. This is the third special presentation that the Dominican Film Showcase (GFDD initiative) and the Dominican Global Film Festival present at the prestigious Lincoln Center theatre.

  • Costa Ricans Enjoyed Dominican Films

    For the first time ever, the Dominican Film Showcase went to Costa Rica. Every Tuesday from January 23 to February 20th, Costa Ricans enjoyed an interesting variety of some of the best Dominican films, including: Dólares de Arena, Death by a Thousand Cuts, La Familia Reyna, La Lucha de Ana and Cristo Rey, as well as the presence of special guests such as Yvette Marichal, Director of the DR Film Commission (DGCine) Laura Amelia Guzmán, Dominican filmmaker, and Danilo Reynoso, Dominican actor and film producer.

  • “Sol Caribe” and Carlos Alfredo Fatule Brough some Heat to Washington, DC!

  • Dominican Films Jeffrey and Site of Sites Presented at GALA Theatre

    The most recent production by Dominican film director Archie López, Luis, had its premiere in the United States on May 15 in the Walter Reade Theater at The Film Society of Lincoln Center in New York before a packed auditorium. The premiere included the presence of GFDD/Funglode president, Dr. Leonel Fernández, and Dr. Margarita Cedeño de Fernández, vice president of the Dominican Republic, as well as businessman Manuel Corripio, Dominican producer and director Archie López, producer Desiré Reyes and part of the premiered movie’s cast.

  • Dominican Productions Woodpeckers and Jeffrey, Award Winners at the Havana Film Festival in New York

    The Dominican films Woodpeckers (Carpinteros) and Jeffrey received awards in the eighteenth edition of the New York Havana Film Festival, an internationally recognized competition that celebrates Latin American film. Thanks to the support of GFDD/Funglode’s Dominican Film Showcase and the Dominican Republic’s General Directorate of Film (DGCINE) both productions were screened in New York between March 30 and April 7, accompanied by their respective directors, José María Cabral and Yanillis Pérez. Both productions won awards: Best Director went to José María Cabral for Woodpeckers and an Honorable Mention from the jury was given to Jeffrey.

  • Sweet! The Life Story of a Dominican Pitcher Screens at the DR Embassy

    The last GFDD’s Dominican Film Showcase Embassy Edition of 2016 screened the film ‘Sugar’, a sports drama directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, that follows the story of Miguel Santos, a. k. a. Sugar, a Dominican pitcher from San Pedro de Macorís, struggling to make it to the big leagues and pull himself and his family out of poverty. Gretchen Pockels, Cultural Attaché from the Embassy of the Dominican Republic in the United States, and María Victoria Abreu, DREFF Programming Director, introduced the film and accompanied the audience gathered at the Embassy.

  • A Cry for Freedom, Love and Justice: “Flor de Azúcar” Wins Over Audience in Washington DC at it US Premiere

The US premiere of veteran film director Fernando Báez’s Flor de Azúcar (Sugar Fields) at the opening night of the Dominican Film Showcase in Washington DC turned into a tribute to Dominican film, Dominican women and one of the best Dominican writers of all time, Juan Bosch…and of course, Fernando Báez himself. In addition, other pleasant news emerged: Flor de Azúcar has been shortlisted as a nominee for Best Foreign Film at this year’s Academy Awards, a milestone in Dominican and Latin American film history.

The quarterly program of the Dominican Film Showcase Embassy Edition, started with the first screening on March 1, 2016 in Washington, DC, with the film ‘No hay más remedio’ screened to a wonderful audience that attended the invitation and enjoyed the movie. The welcoming remarks were presented by Ligia Reid, Cultural Attaché at the Embassy of the Dominican Republic in Washington, and María Victoria Abreu, GFDD’s International Affairs and Socio-Economic Development Program Manager. They also explained the details of this initiative that is the product of a close collaboration between the two entities and thanked Dominican Republic Film Commission (DGCINE for its acronym in Spanish) for their support.

    A Dominican movie made with the support of several institutions including GFDD andFUNGLODE, has made it to the list of official Oscar entries of Best Foreign Film submissions. “Love Child” (La Hija Natural), written and directed by Dominican Republic’s first female director, Leticia Tonos, has been selected to represent the Dominican Republic at the 84th Academy Awards in 2012.
