GFDD and FUNGLODE is Proud to Present a Lunchtime Screening of The Growth of Lake Enriquillo: Environmental, Social and Scientific Implications
Thursday April 11th, 2013Washington DC, April 11, 2013
On Thursday, April 11, Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and its sister organization Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE) will host a documentary screening of the short film, The Growth of Lake Enriquillo: Environmental, Social and Scientific Implications, (In Spanish with English subtitles).
The Dominican Republic (DR) is currently under the threat of an additional flooding around the Lake Enriquillo, located in a rift valley that extends from Port-au-Prince Bay in Haiti to near Neiba Bay in the DR. The documentary investigates the reasons behind the recent growth of Lake Enriquillo from 164 km2 to 350 km2 in the last seven years. These include increased rainfall, sediment run-off from deforestation and other environmental occurrences, all of which are having a negative effect on nearby towns and their residents.
This 16 minutes short film, produced by GFDD and FUNGLODE, presents a recent research conducted to investigate why Lake Enriquillo has been growing and to address the environmental, social and scientific implications of this phenomenon.
After the short film, there will be a briefing of recent findings related to the current status of the Lake, plus a showing of film clips by renowned director Fernando Baez, of his own soon-to-be released documentary film on the tragic consequences of Enriquillo’s growth.
The screening and discussion session, hosted in collaboration with the Department of Sustainable Development (SEDI) at the OAS, is being held, as a part of the 4-day Dominican Film Showcase Program currently taking place in Washington, DC.
